What are Fixed (Carrier) Oils? What are the Differences with Essential Oils?

Fixed oils and essential oils are two main components commonly used in aromatherapy applications and cosmetic products. There are significant differences between these two types of oils. Fixed oils, also known as carrier oils, are obtained from plant seeds or kernels and have a more concentrated structure. Essential oils, on the other hand, are obtained from the roots, leaves or flowers of plants by distillation, are highly volatile and are not actually oils chemically. Fixed oils are used to dilute essential oils and ensure they can be safely applied to the skin.

What is Fixed (Carrier) Oil?

The simplest answer to the question of “What is a fixed oil?” or “ What is a carrier oil? ” can be given as oils obtained from the fruits, seeds and kernels of plants and are generally liquid at room temperature. These oils are generally obtained by hot and cold pressing methods. Fixed oils obtained from plant sources are produced from the seeds and fruits of various plants such as olive, sunflower, walnut, almond, avocado. Since the cold pressing method ensures that the oils preserve their nutritional value and natural properties, oils obtained by the cold pressing method should be preferred in fixed oils. Fixed oils are also called carrier oils because they allow the safe use of essential oils on the skin. While these oils help nourish and moisturize the skin, they also increase the effect of essential oils.
